Ancient Greek Students Taught by Stephen Anderson, Rodewald Lector in Classical Languages at New College, Oxford
By Addy M-S, Year 13
On Friday the 27th of September, the Ancient Greek A level students received a special double lesson of prose composition taught by Stephen Anderson, Rodewald Lector in Classical languages at New College, Oxford.
As the co-author of ‘Writing Greek’ alongside John Taylor, we had the honour of tackling one of his very own prose composition passages in the book. He even gave us some back story on his inspiration when writing the English sentences from the book which we had translated in the past! His consistent guidance which he offered to us throughout the translation process, meant that by the end we had created ‘the perfect prose comp’ and it was very satisfying when, having compared it with his model version, they were both equally as impressive. With multiple of our textbooks written by Stephen signed, we are all excited to take the words of wisdom and techniques with which he supplied us into our future prose composition lessons to take our Greek to the next level.
After the serious work, Mr Anderson and Ms Copin then enjoyed catching up about their time teaching at Winchester College, which included a surreal afternoon spent rescuing a mattress stuck in a stairwell. Mr Anderson and Mrs Goodall also discussed upcoming changes to the Oxford Classics course (Mrs Goodall’s alma mater) and inspiration for future Classics trips to Greece!
