Behind the Scenes at the Lower School Production 2025

Last week saw three excellent performances of this year’s Lower School Production of ‘The Wolves of Willoughby Chase’ – a thrilling, funny and spectacular adaptation of Joan Aitken’s classic novel set in an alternative history of England. The story told of two brave and determined girls as they fight against ferocious wolves, snowy wastelands and a very evil guardian, Miss Slighcarp.

Here’s a different perspective on the shows, written by Neha A, our Student Stage Manager (Year 8):

“The Lower School Production this year was ‘The Wolves of Willoughby Chase’ and this year it was extremely fun. This year was a bit different as we had three groups performing as it was a large script which means triple of the same costume, hair, makeup, and props.

It was a lot of fun helping with the costumes, hair and makeup, collaborating with my fellow stage management team, hair, makeup and costume to decide what would be best for each character. Props this year were in the hands of Miss Smith and two-year 9’s, Amelie and Rose, who all did a fantastic job in making sure everything was where it needs to be.

Lighting and sound were also incredible. The sound was so cool, as it was in time with the acting, and replicated gun shots, windows breaking and a train stopping. Lighting was incredible, making the audience feel like there were in the woods, ice-skating with Bonnie and Sylvia, at Miss Briskett’s ‘School for Girls’, on the train with Mr Grimshaw and Sylvia and most important at Willoughby Chase. Lighting and sound collaborated so well together to make it an immersive experience. In the end, the play was amazing.

Everyone was on top of their lines, they knew their cues, what props they were using and overall told the story in a very unique way from a children’s novel.”
