BUDS – From Buttered Toast to Commedia dell’Arte!
In our Year 5 BUDS Programme on Saturday pupils continued building on the soft skills required to be able to think creatively, solve problems, and express themselves.
This week’s sessions featured:
Creative Thinking
Students considered the element of a creative mind, particularly when creating stories. The simple and yet often forgotten idea of the flow, in the creation of a story in its natural direction, making it a more enjoyable experience for the audience.
Public Speaking
Today’s session focused on storytelling and creating stock characters. This links to the characters of Pantalone, Zanni, Arlecheno and Magnifico in Commedia dell’Arte. Using improvised scenarios of ‘The Fly in the Soup’ and ‘The Coin’ and ‘The Tooth Extraction.’
STEM
Does toast always land butter side down? Using real buttered toast, groups predicted and worked out their method, test, recorded and then evaluated. There is no right or wrong answer but variables can influence the outcome, so to prevent unconscious bias, children must spot these and try again!
BUDS is our Saturday enrichment programme working with primary schools in Ealing, aimed at Building Understanding, Developing Skills in Gifted and Talented Year 5 pupils from local primary schools: Ark Priory Primary Academy, Christ the Saviour CoE Primary School, Fielding Primary School, Hobbayne Primary School, Holy Family Catholic Primary School, Montpelier Primary School, North Ealing Primary School, Selborne Primary School, St Vincent’s Catholic Primary School, Stanhope Primary School and West Acton Primary School.
Many thanks to everyone for coming and to our staff involved in the set up and running of the sessions, plus our 14 students from Year 12 for helping out.
Looking forward to see you all again in March!
