Celebrating LGBTQ+ History Month: Science and Innovation

This morning Miss Finch gave an informative Diversity and Inclusion assembly on LGBTQ+ History Month. Now in its 22nd year, this month serves as a vital opportunity to look back at the rich history and achievements of the LGBTQ+ community, recognizing their profound impact on our world.

The main aim of LGBTQ+ History Month goes beyond just looking at the past. It is designed to:

  • Foster empathy: Building a culture of respect and understanding.
  • Promote inclusion: Ensuring our education and community represent everyone.
  • Combat bullying: Creating a safe space for all students to be themselves.
  • Celebrate diversity: Highlighting the role models who have paved the way for others.

This year’s theme highlights the critical role of LGBTQ+ individuals in the fields of Science and Innovation. Miss Finch reminded us that diverse teams are essential for developing solutions that benefit the whole of society. However, despite their contributions, many LGBTQ+ scientists remain underrepresented in our history books, including the three trailblazers which she then introduced us to:

The assembly concluded with a powerful reminder that history isn’t just something we study, it’s something we create. Miss Finch challenged our students to think about how they can help shape a better future by making our school community the most inclusive and welcoming place possible.
