Classics Beyond the Classroom: Year 10 trip to King’s College Greek Play
By Adeline G, Year 10 Journalist Leader
One warm evening in June, Mrs Goodall took the Year 10 Classics students on an enriching Classics trip to get a glimpse of Greek theatre through the King’s College annual Greek Play.
We began the evening with a tasty meal at Honest Burgers, and then walked to the nearby Greenwood Theatre to watch the performance. The play was an adaptation of Lysistrata, framed as a play within a play set in the late nineteenth century. The separated men and women’s departments are forced to work together for the first time to put on a production of Lysistrata.
The play was an excellent blend of humour and drama, with several captivating plotlines and a much anticipated production of the play itself at the end. The actors – all of whom were students at the university – impressed by performing the end section in Aristophanes’ original Ancient Greek. Although we were aided by a translation, appearing as subtitles above the stage, the actors delivered their lines in such a way that the language was funny and engaging.
A huge thank you to Mrs Goodall for taking us! The play was one of the funniest I’ve seen, and was a great way to appreciate the language and culture beyond the classroom!
