"We believe that being part of a community matters, it involves reaching out to volunteer, raising funds for causes we care about, and sharing our spaces to build meaningful relationships. These collaborations are mutually enriching and enable our students to create connections beyond the school gates."

Economics and Entrepreneurship Opportunities Incoming!

The spring term promises to be a busy one for our budding entrepreneurs and economics students!

Tycoon Enterprise Competition

Tycoon is a unique national enterprise competition for students aged 6 to 18. Every participating team writes a business plan, is provided a risk-free goodwill loan and starts a business.  Participants compete through a kickstarter style platform, in a safe and controlled environment. In the competition, which is supported by the Peter Jones Foundation, businesses are judged on how they have performed on the following eight enterprise capabilities: Creativity and Innovation, Communication, Digital Skills, Financial Skills, Leadership, Problem Solving, Self-Management & Resilience and Teamwork.

The Year 12 Tycoon trading window has just come to an end earlier this week so we are waiting to see how much profit each of our five teams made. NHEHS teams have been very successful in recent years, notably the Paws for the Planet group who reached the national final!

Miss Watkins, Head of Economics, is hoping to launch the competition with Year 9 in the next few weeks, so watch this space!

GAIN Investment Challenge

Some of our Year 12 Economists are looking forward to taking part in the GAIN Investment Challenge, which starts next week. The GAIN Investment Challenge is a stock pitch competition which aims to provide young women and non-binary students in years 10 to 13 with a unique insight into the world of investment management and key analysis skills.

Each participating team, consisting of 3-5 students, will be assigned a company (the stock) to research. Guided by industry experts and supported by an investment mentor during the school spring term – over 7 online sessions – students will advise on whether to buy, hold, or sell the stock as a potential investment opportunity. The winning team will be awarded a prize of £1000 for their school and a £200 voucher for each individual team member.  The winners and runners up will be invited to attend an event in the Summer to collect their prizes and visit an investment firm where they will meet inspirational women from across the industry.

Great British Economic Olympiad

Many of our Economics students are also taking part in the Great British Economic Olympiad next week too. This is a national competition for secondary school students run by Rochester Independent College on behalf of the International Economics Olympiad Committee. Budding economists will develop critical problem-solving skills, learn to think more creatively and get a chance to test their knowledge in new, real-world situations. The competition consists of 3 stages:

  1. 50 Economics questions (online, within a time limit)
  2. Financial literacy (online, within a time limit)
  3. Business case – presentation of case solutions to a panel of judges at RIC.

The top performing students will be given the opportunity to represent the UK at the International Economics Olympiad.

10X Challenge

Year 8 will be taking part in the 10X Challenge from Monday 3rd to Sunday 28th March 2025, with Miss Watkins launching the competition just before February half term. During the four weeks students will use a £10 pledge to get their business ideas off the ground.  The national competition is run by Young Enterprise UK, the UK’s leading enterprise and financial education charity for young people aged 11 – 19 years. It introduces enterprise and financial education and enhances key skills, including communication, creativity, problem solving, teamwork and confidence. 2024’s Year 8 students thoroughly enjoyed their challenge, which ended with the popular Enterprise Fair, where our young entrepreneurs got to present their products to sell to students and staff, from handmade bracelets, bags rings, to clay sculptures and customised charms, crocheted octopuses, lip glosses and balms, scrunchies, earrings, keyrings and more!
