GDST Junior Mathematics Conference 2024 at the Mathematical Institute, University of Oxford
By Summer Z and Nikita P, Year 6
On the 9th October, six year 6 girls, Mr Hayes and Mrs Lidstone went to Oxford University for a Junior Maths Conference. Many other GDST schools were attending the event too and there was a mathematician who taught them about different shapes and made smoke rings using a recycled bin. Then, after heading out of the fifty five minute introduction, Mr Hayes and Mrs Lidstone led the Year 6s to see many of the mathematical art installations and explained how they worked. The students from Oxford University showed them how to change a mobius loop into a pair of hearts interlocked with each other. After lunch, they looked around and drew some interesting models that they saw during the art tour. The girls had the opportunity to collaborate, as the Oxford students put them into groups and pairs with other schools.
It was an exciting and interesting experience and the girls were glad to be chosen to take part.
