It’s Coming Home – NHEHS Wins the Chrystall Carter Public Speaking Award… Again!
Earlier this week NHEHS hosted the grand final of the Chrystall Carter Award. The prize was established in memory of Chrystall Carter, Legal Adviser and, later, Deputy Legal Secretary to the GDST, who championed girls’ education and had a firm belief in the power of argument. Year 11 finalists from NHEHS, Howell’s School, Brighton Girls, Nottingham Girls High School and Croydon High School spoke on a subject of their choice for seven minutes before being questioned by the audience for five minutes.
Topics included ‘Are we living in George Orwell’s world?,’ ‘The current global populism crisis is solvable, but only if we turn to history,’ ‘The paradox of perfectionism’ and ‘Social media – a black hole?’
We were delighted to welcome back three phenomenal NHEHS alumnae; Journalist Kathryn Flett (NHEHS 1982), local councillor Gabriella Giles (NHEHS 2003) and Nicky Sargent (NHEHS 1981), Founder of The Farm Group (and BAFTA award winner!), alongside Charlie Altman, NHEHS Chair of Governors, to sit on the panel of judges.
Speeches were judged on speakers’ ability to engage an audience, appropriateness of style and language, grasp of subject matter, clarity of expression, effective use of time and ability to deal with questions.
Well done to everyone on fantastic presentations!
The day ended on a high with our very own NHEHS finalist, Roxana, being chosen as the overall winner with her fascinating talk, titled, ‘Can we ever escape the mistakes of the past?’ Congratulations also to Sonoma from Howell’s who was runner up.
“This is an event that makes you realise how much you love your job,” said Miss Rachel Gordon, our public speaking coordinator. “Getting to nurture and champion our students as they hone their skills and grow in confidence to speak about topics that mean something to them personally is a privilege.”
Miss Gordon continued: “We are so grateful to the judges – four inspirational powerhouse women who actively support young women in their industries.”
Thanks to all involved and we look forward to hosting again next year!
