A Level French Students Shine in Joutes Oratoires Debate Held by French Institute
By Ridhi and Georgia, Year 12
A group of A Level French students recently participated in the Joutes Oratoires, a French debating competition held by the French Institute at St Paul’s Girls’ School.
Despite the daunting prospect of the Joutes Oratoires, we found this experience enriching and, overall, enjoyable. We were given three motions to prepare: the banning of AI in schools; banning of urban sprawl; Asterix and the Romans. Our favourite motion was Asterix and the Romans, as it had the most scope for discussion and we won it. It was enlightening to see how the other students fared, and their differing points of view, as well as the varying ways in which they argued their opinions. In conclusion, although it was frightening, it was ultimately memorable and helped us to improve our French speaking skills.
