Junior and Inter Athletics Teams Compete at Regional Track & Field Cup Finals
By Sofia B, Year 9
On Monday the 16th of June, year 7- 8 and 9-10 athletes went to the regional A finals held in Watford for the English Schools Track and Field Cup for junior girls and intermediate girls. We had already both won through to this round last month and this was the first time in many years that both teams had qualified to the A team finals!
When we arrived, everyone was very excited to compete in their events and give it their best. Some amazing highlights from the day were for the juniors:
Lara coming third and Alice fourth in their 800m heats. Ira won her 300m heat with Essya coming second in hers, while Rosie came third in her 100 heat.
There were some brilliant performances in the field events too, including Isla in the long jump, Alice and Cecily in the high jump, Rosie and Essya in the shot put, Emma and Elizabeth in the discus and Martha in the javelin. Well done to Maria who scored the most points for the junior team with her 1500m run.
For the intermediate girls:
Ella Coward got a PB in 300m (2nd in her heat) and long jump, Erin 1st in her 200m heat, Sofia 2nd in her 800m heat. There were some great performances on the track from Mary Kate in the 1500m, Lara and Nina in the hurdles, Cosi in the 100m, Olivia in the 300m and Nandika in the 200m.
And in the field too from Rebecca and Lara in the hammer, Cosi in the high jump, Lily in te javelin, Erin in the shot put, Charlotte in the discus and Sofia in the long jump.
Despite the very hot conditions we all did our best and ended up doing very well! Miss Millns said, “The standard at this competition is incredibly high, and we are beyond proud of you all and your commitment, well done.”
The junior team (year 7 and 8) came joint 6th out of 12 and the intermediate team (year 9 and 10) came 9th out of 14!
