Junior School Hosts First Ever Environmental Summit for 90+ Local Primary School Pupils & Staff
An amazing day with our nearly 100 guests from Stanhope Primary, Durston House, Edward Betham, Selborne Primary, North Ealing Primary, Oaklands Primary, Derwentwater Primary and Holy Family Catholic Primary schools.
In the morning pupils were divided into mixed groups and took part in a variety of sustainability workshops:
Gardening – Learning how to increase biodiversity in your school and what to plant for every season.
VR – Comparing different environments – the Arctic, Savanna, Deserts, Rainforests, Oceans.
Drama – Creating a freeze frame/small dramatic scene in groups to show one of two possible future scenarios: where either laws have not been passed to ban the use of single plastics or a world which is plastic-free, showing the impact on nature and people.
STEM – Building a solar-powered robot in groups and thinking about what a future would look like if everything was powered by renewable energy.
In the afternoon we heard a great talk from Digby Wheeler from Citizen Zoo all about rewilding, and particularly the incredible Ealing Beaver Project at Paradise Fields by Horsenden Hill.
Finally, all pupils came together for a collaborative forum where they were able to discuss in mixed groups these key questions:
What is your school doing well to combat the impacts of climate change?
What ideas do you have to implement further sustainable practices in your school?
What ideas can you and your Summit Group come up with to further educate the wider community and to support environmental and sustainable change.
A huge thanks to everyone for your brilliant participation and great ideas towards a more sustainable future.
