Last term, the English Department at NHEHS launched Literature and Language Society (Lit and Lang for short).

Inspired by North London Collegiate School’s Literary and Dramatic Society, which Dr Klimt ran when she was a student, Lit and Lang is for Year 10s and above who are devoted to all things English! On the last Thursday of every month, students and staff meet in the Portrait Room over teatime treats to discuss a literature or language topic. Last term’s sessions included T.S. Eliot’s The Waste Land and literary Modernism, Shakespearean tragedy (with guest speaker Professor Jane Kingsley-Smith of Roehampton University), and a seasonal close reading of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.

This term, Lit and Lang Society will be hosting discussions on ‘The Language of Picture Books’ (with guest speaker Sophie Klimt), ‘What Makes a Modern Classic?’, and a special Book Week debate on Austen vs the Bronte Sisters. We can’t wait to get started again!
