Myth Busting Assembly by our Neurodiversity Committee
Our Neurodiversity Committee gave a fantastic assembly on Monday as they dispelled eight myths around neurodiversity, ranging from “neurodiverse people are less able and lack intelligence” to “neurodiverse people are all geniuses, especially in STEM.”
By suggesting that the Neurodivergence is a “gift” undermines the real efforts people are making to achieve something. The students challenged other mistakenly-held views around neurodiverse people having a certain “look,” and that they hate social interactions. Many think that sensory overload is always triggered by sound, yet it can often be caused by tiredness, with one of the students recommending ‘asking your friends how they feel and’ instead of just assuming you know how they are.
Ms Hall left us with plenty of food for thought with a wonderful final quote by Harvey Blume: “Neurodiversity may be every bit as crucial for the human race as biodiversity is for life in general.”
