Chemists Take on UK Chemistry Olympiad Challenge
By Anna W, Alicia W, Abbirami Y and Sandra G, Year 12
The Chemistry Olympiad is an exciting initiative that takes place once a year, open to students in Year 12 and 13. This year we were challenged with questions on topics ranging from unit cells to rocket fuel and even cheese(!). It was a great opportunity to apply some of our contextual knowledge learnt in both our lessons and weekly enrichment activities. Although there were some challenging questions, it was interesting to be able to learn topics which aren’t on the A level specification and once we began, it became easier to apply our knowledge to the unknown scenarios that we were presented with. Overall, it was an enriching experience which we would recommend to anyone, and especially those who have an interest in pursuing chemistry to a higher level.
Fifteen NHEHS students took part with results being released after half term. More on the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Chemistry Olympiad competition here.
