NHEHS Hosts Cicero Cup Heat as Year 5 and 6 Debaters Shine
On Tuesday 4th February, we were delighted to host a heat of the Cicero Cup, a nationwide primary debating competition. Girls from our Year 5 and 6 Debating Club took part in two rounds of debate against Broomfield House, St Helen’s and St Stephen’s primaries.
First, pupils took part in a prepared debate around whether we should ban cars and whether zoos should be shut before having only 20 minutes to work as a team to prepare for their final debate, where banning violent video games and phones for children were passionately discussed. Our girls did an incredible job articulating their points and compiling compelling arguments. The judges gave a special mention to Ariana Sharma as one of the star speakers from the day.
This year, the competition was incredibly tough and, whilst the girls did exceptionally well, we did not get through to the next round. Well done to St Stephen’s and Broomfield House School who won the heats. However, our girls thoroughly enjoyed the morning and are looking forward to more competitive debates in the summer term.
