NHEHS Sponsors The 2026 Ealing Book Festival
This year’s Ealing Book Festival arrived with a special significance, coinciding with the National Year of Reading. At Notting Hill & Ealing High School, we believe in the transformative power of a good story, which is why we were thrilled to sponsor three standout events that celebrated the depth, wit and resilience of the written word.
From the harrowing history of 20th-century China to the vibrant landscapes of 1920s Provence, and finally to the chaotic fun of “Weird Street,” here is a look back at the sessions we were proud to support.
1. A Legacy of Truth: Jung Chang in Conversation

In a poignant session with Lorraine Heggessey, Jung Chang reflected on the enduring legacy of Wild Swans. Decades after its publication, Chang’s discussion of her new work, Fly, Wild Swans, offered a masterclass in the importance of female narrative.
She spoke with moving restraint about:
The Cultural Revolution: Navigating the painful realities of her family’s past.
A Daughter’s Promise: Honouring her mother’s wish to see these stories told.
The Power of Honesty: Why telling women’s stories with authenticity remains a vital act of freedom.
2. Restoring the Muse: Lucy Steeds and The Artist

We were then transported to the sun-drenched hills of 1920s Provence with Lucy Steeds. Discussing her latest novel, The Artist, Steeds delved into the life of a reclusive painter to explore the often-overlooked contributions of female talent. It was a fascinating deep dive into creativity and gender, questioning how many great women artists have been lost to the shadows of history.
3. Laughter on Weird Street: Stephen and Anita Mangan

Reading, of course, should also be a riot! Stephen and Anita Mangan brought an explosion of energy to the festival with Welcome to Weird Street. It was a joy to see families laughing together, proving that the National Year of Reading is as much about the “weird” and wonderful as it is about the classics.
A huge thank you to the organisers Ealing Book Festival and authors for such an inspiring series of events. We are proud to be part of Ealing’s vibrant literary landscape!
