PRE Visit to St Paul’s Cathedral and Quakers of Westminster
Last week, the Year 11 PRE classes visited the magnificent St Paul’s Cathedral followed by a talk with the lovely Quakers of Westminster. This trip was extremely enjoyable, especially having the opportunity to witness the impressive and intricate architecture constructed centuries ago in St Paul’s. Despite its plain appearance, Westminster Quaker house had a relaxing and welcoming atmosphere; the Quakers who talked to us were witty and informative, making the visit entertaining yet still educational.
At St Paul’s Cathedral, we were led on a tour around the cathedral, taking in its spectacular art and enormous dome adorned with sacred artistry. The various paintings around St Paul’s served as helpful revision for us in going over Jesus’s life and other Bible stories. We spotted many features of churches in the cathedral such as the altar where communion is held. Afterwards, we had a Q&A with a chaplain at the church, who gave us interesting insight on being a female with a role in the Anglican Church. Asking many ethical questions that are often found in our exams, helped us consider a different perspective – from a Christian rather than our own.
Next, a half an hour walk brought us to Westminster Quaker House. Three of the Quakers who attend worship there came to talk to us about their faith and the structure of the Quaker house itself. Interestingly, the walls had been soundproofed to maintain a quiet atmosphere in their room of worship. We learnt lots about Quakers and how they are sometimes not all Christian, but can be even Buddhist or Hindu; they explained how Quakerism is primarily based on peace and love.
Overall, these experiences were useful revision and extremely interesting!
