Teachers Volunteer Life-Changing Tutoring with Lumina
Notting Hill & Ealing is part of an exciting partnership with Lumina, an online Tutoring Programme for Children Looked After (CLA), a vulnerable group at significant educational disadvantage preventing them from fulfilling their potential.
NHEHS teachers (along with colleagues from other leading independent schools) provide online, subject-specific, one-to-one tutorial sessions particularly in Maths, English and Science for children in care. It was set up by Harrow School in response to the loss of learning during the pandemic. It has since expanded to a vibrant partnership between like-minded schools such as ours who are similarly committed to improving the educational outcomes for young people facing significant barriers to progress.
Our teacher volunteers have committed to teaching a 40-minute lesson once a week, providing life-changing academic support for a care-experienced student, enabling them to improve their academic attainment. NHEHS teachers have been volunteering with Lumina since the lockdown with 12 teachers taking part to date.
‘‘The online one-to-one tuition organised by Lumina has grown from strength to strength… As professionals we have witnessed first-hand the benefits that this tuition programme has brought to our students; including good academic progress as well as raised levels of confidence across many areas of their lives.’ – Mellina Williamson Taylor, Harrow Virtual School Headteacher
‘For some, it has not been an easy journey, living away from home. Working with kind and nurturing mentors has improved confidence, raised aspirations and provided a wonderful platform to connect with others in similar life situations. They are optimistic, feel supported and look forward to the journey ahead.’ – Sue Tarry, Ealing Virtual School
