TfL Junior Citizenship Talk for Year 6
As part of the PSHE curriculum, we welcomed Tara from TfL to Junior School today to give a TfL Junior Citizenship session to our Year 6 girls to help prepare them for independent travel ahead of starting secondary school.
The session also counts towards our Travel for Life award.
Our Year 6s picked up some great tips on what makes a good journey:
- Plan your journey beforehand and look at the map (the TfL Go app is handy for planning journeys, suggesting different routes and active travel with suggestions on how long each part of the journey will take)
- Be mindful of others using public transport
- Communication is key – make sure you let others know where you are going and at what time
- Check the weather before you go out to make sure you have everything you need with you
- Look out for each other during your journey to keep each other safe
- Speak to ‘safer strangers” such as station staff if you are unsure about something
The Year 6s also learned about the benefits of active travel, where you can walk or cycle part/all of a journey (more sociable, can take safe shortcuts, good for your physical and mental health). There was also very practical advice on how to apply for an 11 – 15 year old ZIP card and the benefits (free bus travel and discounted tube journeys).
The biggest surprise was finding out that there are up to 23 cameras on a double decker bus!
