The Joy of Playing Music Together – Spring Ensembles Concert
We were privileged to enjoy 12 different groups and nearly as many different styles of music last Thursday at our Ensembles Concert, with over 100 students taking part.
The concert kicked off with the wonderful Lower School Chamber Choir singing Ave Verum Corpus by Mozart, with many of the 30-strong choir from Year 7. The Wind Band followed up with a lively performance of Aztec Fire by Bocock. The String Quartet performed a beautiful rendition of Vals de Fleurs from The Nutcracker by Tchaikovsky. Session Orchestra played a very familiar Beauty & the Beat by Menken, before Flute Ensemble enjoyed fun rounds of Joplin’s The Entertainer. Next up was our Jazz Band who performed Mercy, Mercy, Mercy & Birdland by Zawinul. Our Chamber Choir took to the stage for a brilliant Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in F by Dyson.
Our unique Bassoon Quintet played the catchy Colonel Bogey March by Alford arr. Portus before our a cappella group, Tone Down for What, sung a fantastic version of Dark Red, by Lacy arranged by Bella F and Lara G. Year 7/8 Rock Band were depleted in numbers due to illness but gave a fabulous performance of the Arctic Monkeys’ Fluorescent Adolescent. The Year 8 Rock Band were not to be outdone with a very strong interpretation of Bastille’s Pompeii.
The Year 10 Rock Band finished the concert on a great high, with a powerful Don’t Look Back in Anger by Oasis, with Georgia heroically stepping in at the last minute to play on keyboards!
Well done to all students for making a truly enjoyable evening of music.
