The Portrait Room – NHEHS Student Magazine 2024/25
The Year 13 Editorial Team are excited to launch The Portrait Room 2025 – the 141st edition of our much-loved student magazine. Each year, the publication showcases the creativity, insight and talent of our students across the school.
Our thanks and congratulations go to the 2025 editorial team and everyone who contributed to The Portrait Room.
Here’s what they had to say about the editorial process:
What was the most challenging part of producing the magazine?
We think the most challenging part was organising all of the different aspects of the school into the magazine. So much goes on at the school, so trying to ensure everything was highlighted in the magazine took a lot of organisation. Sorting out the page allocations and balancing all of the subjects equally was also a challenge but we managed to pull everything together in the end!
What are you most proud of in this year’s edition?
We are most proud of the overall design and quality of the magazine. We wanted a design that captured how we view the school with a range of colours and pictures as well as content from students from all years in all departments. We think the magazine has really achieved this and are proud to have it as something that will be part of the school’s achievements, representing our time in school for years to come. A big shout out to India too for her amazing front cover!
Did you introduce any new features or themes we should look out for?
We added in the student choice awards where students from all years could pick their top 3 TV shows, albums, films etc from last school year (2024-2025). We thought this would be a fun new addition to see what popular culture is popular within the school to look back on. We also added a fun guessing game to guess what teacher matches to an AI generated action figure. A double page spread was also added on the sixth form to highlight the fun events that happen there which the rest of the school may not see!
What did you enjoy most about creating the magazine?
Hearing and incorporating everyone’s ideas was really fun as it allowed us to get completely creative with the design process. It was great working with people that take completely different A-level subjects to us as they had great ideas and different perspectives on what should be highlighted in their departments. It was also lovely to collect and read articles from students ranging from Year 7-13 as it made the magazine feel well rounded and reflective of the school as a whole.
What did you learn from the experience?
We learnt how to manage and organise a committee of students with regular meetings and working to deadlines. Staying organised and on top of the magazine took a lot of work and discipline but we are so proud of the committee and what we produced in the end!
You can read the full magazine below and enjoy a glimpse into the creativity and perspectives of our students.
