Transatlantic Online Meetup with Sister School, Academy of Notre Dame de Namur, Pennsylvania
By Mrs Johnson, Charities Co-ordinator
On Tuesday 21st February the Year 11 enrichment group joined a Google Meet with the Academy of Notre Dame de Namur School in Pennsylvania. The class had been researching and developing their presentations on Fairtrade to present to the Notre Dame school. This activity formed part of a series events working towards gaining the next Fairtrade award – the Fairactive award. On the meet the class shared their presentations with the students in Pennsylvania and the US students shared their presentations and knowledge of Fairtrade in the US. Click here to see a photo of the meet. Here is what our students said:
“We had the great opportunity to connect with girls our age in Philadelphia to discuss Fairtrade. We faced an unexpected hurdle when we found that our US counterparts did not know what Fairtrade was, but had a great chance to inform them of what we learnt when doing research on Fairtrade coffee. We then had a fun time discussing the differences between the US and the UK when it comes to buying products and shopping ethically. Overall, it was a great and enriching experience. ” – Salem
“We really enjoyed speaking to the American students and found it very enriching. It was a very interesting experience, as not only did we discuss Fairtrade, but we also had an in depth conversation about their own personal topics for their final projects. One of the girls was doing a presentation about the Catholic church and how their teachings affect fair trade. We learnt a lot about the catholic influence on Fairtrade, and hopefully our project helped her with research. Over all, it was an incredibly fascinating experience, and all the girls were friendly and interested in what we had to say.” – Charlotte
