Scholars from Years 7-13 recently travelled to see the Aurora Orchestra perform The Rite of Spring by heart at the Southbank centre.
The concert began with a retelling of the context behind the composition and of the ballet. The actors also drew our attention to the complex harmony and rhythms used within the ballet by encouraging the audience to sing chords, and then clap rhythms, using this to illustrate how sections of the piece was constructed. This served to make the piece accessible to all ages.
At the end, the musicians performed extracts whilst surrounding the audience, which led to a totally different sonic experience.
