These collaborations are mutually enriching and enable our students to create connections beyond the school gates."

What’s for Lunch? Y7-12 Food Reps Have Their Say

Food at NHEHS is a big deal and our students like to give their views about what’s on the menu. Every term our Food Reps meet with Mrs Henry and Ms Grew to discuss our lunch and break menus. Food Reps are elected for each form by the students who then quiz their forms about their overall favourite and least favourite meals from the current menu, as well as put forward their forms’ suggestions for next term’s lunch and snack menus.

Last week was the final Food Committee Meeting of the year, where Mrs Henry gave feedback from the previous meeting and was pleased to tell the students that several of their requests from last term had now been incorporated into the summer menus, including guacamole, large pretzels, sushi, iceberg lettuce and more salad dressings, while mango and ginger cheesecake was removed as it was not popular.

According to reps, the most popular dishes on the current menu were:

Year 7:  Katsu curry, carbonara

Year 8: New potatoes, chickpea curry, vegetarian sausages, gyoza

Year 9: Chicken tikka

Year 10: Bao buns, pizza, lamb kofta, mashed potato, roast chicken, roast potatoes and fajitas

Among the least popular were macaroni cheese (Year 7), jerk chicken, chicken wings, peach crumble, chunky chips (Year 8), sausage and mash (Year 9 – though everyone else disagreed!) and fish (Year 10).

Finally, everyone had the chance to put forward their own ideas which Mrs Henry will consider for next term’s menus. These included the return of the old recipe of the chicken pie, chicken noodle soup, vegetarian burgers, more flapjacks and more allergy dessert options. The Reps also asked for hot dogs and mini bags of pretzels, which are requests that Mrs Henry is hoping to action.

Mrs Henry thanked everyone for attending and for their helpful comments and reminded them that they can come and see or email her anytime if they have any questions or suggestions about the catering provision. We await next term’s menus with interest!
