Year 10 Discover the Hidden Wonders of Maths in Everyday Life at Maths Inspiration
By Emily B, Year 10
On 2nd December, Year 10 went to a Maths Inspiration talk near Tottenham Court Road. We watched a lecture with four different speakers, each focusing on a different topic of maths that can be used in everyday life.
The first speaker, Rob Eastaway gave us an insight about the maths behind fairness and showed us the perfect way to split a cake between two or three individuals, although it took over a hundred cuts! The second speaker, Ayliean Macdonald gave us an insight into the maths behind art, especially geometric art, showing us the beauty that is generally ignored. We learnt all about statistics thanks to the third speaker, Jennifer Visser-Rodgers and how to really understand what statistics in newspaper articles are saying, in more detail. Lastly, the fourth speaker, Matt Parker, gave us an in-depth explanation of the correct shape of a football and had even written a petition to the government to change incorrect street signs.
Overall, the trip was an amazing experience and we all learnt a lot about how maths is everywhere around us, especially where we least expect it to be.
