Year 12 EU Workshop for Aspiring Politicians
On Tuesday, Year 12s enjoyed a dynamic and interactive workshop to learn more about the EU and the institutions of the EU. It included why it was set up and what decisions it makes.
The students undertook interactive activities such as looking at:
- The make-up of Parliament: Participants were split into the Groups of the European Parliament – they saw that the grouping is by political viewpoint, not nationality.
- Values and Priorities: Participants were asked what they think the priorities of the European Parliament should be, in relation to the EU’s future relationship with the UK.
- Planning: Each group planned a one-minute presentation on what they believe their Parliamentary Group would see as the Parliament’s position.
- Debate and voting: Each group presented their position, answers questions, and the Parliament votes to put the positions in order of priority.
Europe House delivered the free, engaging and interactive educational session, as commissioned by European Parliament’s Liaison Office in the UK, to students who will attend the EUROSCOLA event in Strasbourg over the October half term. There, our students will have the unique opportunity to interact with peers from across Europe as they step into the shoes of Members of the European Parliament for a day. They will also visit the Council of Europe and the European Court of Human Rights.
After a number of activities last year, NHEHS has become an accredited European Parliament Ambassador School (EPAS). This places us among a select group of schools across Europe that actively encourage students to become ambassadors for fostering positive relationships with Europe.
