Year 4 Swords & Sandals Off to a Super Start!
Year 4 got 2024-25 off to a super start yesterday for their Swords and Sandals Integrated Curriculum (IC) topic with an all-day Roman Workshop led by @historicworkshops.
They learned all about Battle formations and tactics – with half of the class taking on the role of the Romans as they defended themselves against the charging enemy (the rest of the class) who were armed with spears and tennis balls!
Did our Year 4s have what it takes to be a Roman scribe? That was the challenge facing them as they trained to become one, using the same equipment the Romans would have used – a reed pen, ink in a pot and papyrus which came from Egypt as well as learning about Latin and the Roman alphabet. They also learned to play Roman Board Games, including 3 Men’s Morris, 5 Lines and Ludus which was a lot of fun and very competitive! Our Roman Centurion, Marcus Flavia, explained the daily schedule of a Roman soldier and the day ended with a whistlestop tour of 700 years of Roman history in 20 minutes!
Swords and Sandals is part of our IC provision which was recognised as “Great for Innovation” by The Week in their Independent Schools Guide last year.
