Year 8 PRE Trip to Westminster Abbey & The National Gallery
By Jojo, Year 8
This year, we were lucky enough to attend a PRE trip to Westminster Abbey and the National gallery. The trip was to help consolidate some of the things that we had learnt about religion and was a great opportunity to look at the beautiful architecture of the Abbey and the amazing paintings in the gallery. In the Abbey, we were shown round by tour guides who showed us some of the graves of well-known figures who had been buried there such as Stephen Hawking, Rudyard Kipling, Charles Darwin and more. We were able to see where coronations would take place, the chair for the king or queen and were even able to sit in the stands where the choir singers are located. Aside from this, Westminster abbey itself was so beautiful and the detail and care that went into designing it is extremely admirable. After this, we visited the National gallery where we had a look at the religious paintings. It was interesting to see different artists interpretations of Bible stories and Jesus and also the difference between paintings that would be in a church and a painting that someone would own. We had lots of fun recreating some of the paintings and thinking about what might have been going on for each of the characters. In all, it was a fun and eventful trip where we got to learn a lot about religion and religious artwork.

On the 13th of January, Year 8 visited The National Gallery and Westminster Abbey. We hopped on the tube at Ealing Broadway in the morning, to Westminster Abbey. We walked around, accompanied by one of the members of staff, and learned about the rich and unique history of the Abbey. There were many special objects and memorials, and several Royal Tombs including: Edward the Confessor, Harold Godwinson and Harold the Conqueror. After touring the Abbey, we walked up the road towards the National Gallery. Here, we were analysing different paintings, their significance to the Gallery and their origin. After a full day of exciting discoveries and unique artefacts, we headed back to school by tube!
