Alcuin of NHEHS
By Mr Rodgers-Endersby
On Wednesday, the Academic Scholars from across all year groups gathered for the Alcuin of NHEHS project. Alcuin of York was a leading thinker of the 7th and 8th centuries, and an influential pedagogue. At the end of his career as tutor to emperors and their children, he produced a series of mathematical problems: Propositiones ad Acuendos Juvenes (Problems to Sharpen the Young). Our scholars are sharpening their interdisciplinary minds by undertaking a translation of the medieval Latin text, solving the problems, and producing a multimedia account of their work and the work of Alcuin of York.
In their first session, the Scholars decided the scope and parameters of their project. Imperative to this initiative is that the Scholars take lead on proceedings themselves—we merely supply access to academic experts, any desired resources, and food to keep sharp minds ticking.
