Calling All Medics – Sixth Form Medical Conference At NHEHS

On Monday, NHEHS held a Medical Sciences Conference with four inspirational speakers working in medicine today. Organised by our senior reps and chemistry teacher Mr Sheldon for all those interested in a career in medicine, NHEHS Sixth Form pupils were joined by pupils from Twyford CofE High School, Greenford High School, The Cardinal Wiseman Catholic School, Elthorne Park High School, Ellen Wilkinson School for Girls, Dormers Wells High School, and Harrow School.

The first speaker was Gurpreet Kainth, the principal dentist of his own practice in Birmingham working in both NHS and private practice. He graduated from King’s college London Dental Institute and completed post-grad studies in restorative dentistry and oral surgery at the Eastman Dental Institute and Bristol University.

Akshya Sundaresh is a speech and language therapist at Hammersmith hospital, working with people with swallowing and communication disorders. She completed a degree in neuroscience and a master’s in speech and language therapy. Charlotte Willett is senior clinical practice facilitator neurocritical care at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London.

The final speaker was Katharine Hunt, a consultant in Neuroanaesthesia and Intensive Care at University College London Hospitals. In addition to clinical work, she leads on resuscitation and is the clinical director for Theatres, Anaesthetics and Critical Care in her area of the Trust. She is also a medical student examiner and interviews for Medicine at University College London.

Pupils were incredibly lucky to hear stories about getting into medicine along with motivational tips and advice from these successful medics – thank you to everyone involved for such an informative evening.
