"We believe that being part of a community matters, it involves reaching out to volunteer, raising funds for causes we care about, and sharing our spaces to build meaningful relationships. These collaborations are mutually enriching and enable our students to create connections beyond the school gates."

Conducting Workshop for Music Scholars with Hilary Campbell and Blossom Street

Scholars in Year 9 and above are offered the chance to learn to conduct. They undertake weekly sessions with Miss Goodsell, covering everything from basic patterns to musicianship and score preparation. Each term they attend a workshop run by Hilary Campbell, professional choral conductor and in the summer term, have the opportunity to run one of the many school ensembles, choosing repertoire, rehearsing the group and being mentored by a member of the music department. This workshop, the students conducted four members of the vocal group, Blossom Street, and had the chance to see how their movements directly impacted the sound produced.

By Kyra S, Year 9 Music Scholar

Last Monday’s conducting workshop with Hilary was truly eye-opening. Her guidance proved to be extremely useful in refining my skills, highlighting various aspects of conducting, from body language to musical interpretation. What stood out was her emphasis on understanding the Latin lyrics of the piece (Locus Iste), stressing the importance of conveying the intended emotion and message. Hilary’s insights significantly enhanced my ability to lead an ensemble effectively, encouraging a deeper connection to the music and its meaning. Her expertise illuminated the diverse role of a conductor, shaping a memorable and enriching learning experience. I am looking forward to our next workshop with her!

By Emma W, Year 9 Music Scholar

The conducting workshop was a true learning experience for me. Having only joined this year on the conducting programme, I was nervous as to how capable I would be at conducting a professional choir- many thanks to Blossom Street Choir for a lovely time- but after meeting Hilary and receiving some useful feedback, I felt much more confident in my actions. Of course, Hilary’s cavapoochon Fizzy was a bonus, but I also enjoyed seeing everyone else’s interpretations on the choices of music given to conduct. Thanks to Hilary and the NHEHS music teachers for arranging the workshop, and I look forward to any future conducting experiences.
