Yesterday Dr. Daniel Beer from Royal Holloway University gave a fascinating talk to students from Years 10 to 13 on Russian history.

His book ‘The House of the Dead’, on Siberian exile under the Tsars, was the winner of the Cundill History Prize in 2017 and was shortlisted for many others. His lecture focused on how Siberia was used by Russian rulers to exile criminals and to develop Russian industry. He brought to life the brutal realities of this period of Russian history and reflected on how it is remembered in Russia today.

It was a privilege for the school to host such an expert on the subject area.
