On Monday 27th September, myself and many other eager flautists had the opportunity to take part in a ‘flute-boxing’ workshop run by Nina Robertson.

As well as trying out flute boxing, we were introduced to many other extended flute techniques such as quarter tones, multi-phonics (playing two notes at the same time), the harmonic series and the high register (which was my favourite extended technique!). Nina introduced the session by demonstrating some of these techniques through the piece “50 Fish” by Louwerse, which impressed us all. It was a very enjoyable experience and a great opportunity to expand beyond the ‘normal’ flute techniques we use every day!
