Much Ado About Numbers
By Minna W, Year 9
When you think of Shakespeare, do you ever think of Maths?
No?
Neither had we, until Wednesday 22nd of February, when the Maths department invited Rob Eastaway to perform a presentation for Year 9 on Maths in Shakespeare.
Straight away, I was captivated, as I really enjoy Maths and love Shakespeare, and I was not disappointed. We learned so many interesting new facts that we had never thought about before! Despite Shakespeare having no Maths teaching at school (his timetable only consisted of lessons of Latin), he made many references to Maths in his plays. We also learned about the history of numbers and Mathematics in Elizabethan times, the origin of the multiplication sign and the significance of numbers in music, as well as a little on astronomy and witchcraft.
It was really fascinating and eye-opening! Thanks to the Maths department for organising such a great event!
