Paws for the Planet – Runners Up in Tycoon 1k!
By Miss Watkins, Head of Economics
On Friday 24th September our Year 9 Paws for the Planet Tycoon Team were in the presence of entrepreneurial royalty when they travelled to Hampton Court Palace for the final of the Tycoon Enterprise Competition, in the shape of Dragons’ Den’s Peter Jones, CBE, whose Foundation organises this national competition.
The team of Jasmine, Emma, Abigail, Morven, Alice, Zoe and Amelie competed with teams from all over the country in the Tycoon 1K section of the competition and were one of only four finalists. In October, they set up a brand new business selling eco friendly products for pets using a start-up loan from the Peter Jones Foundation and continued to trade through until the end of the competition in June.
Our young entrepreneurs generated a healthy return from their business with 10% of their total profits going to Battersea Dogs and Cats Home.
At the final, the girls presented their business on stage, including answering a question from Peter Jones.
I am delighted to be able to tell you that the group came runners-up in their key stage and were presented with a trophy for their achievement. After an incredibly challenging year for schools and businesses, Tycoon had a fantastic engagement of almost 300 student businesses, and I am sure you will agree that the team has done fantastically well!
I am incredibly proud of the hard work the girls have put into their new venture and I am looking forward to working with Year 8 and 12 on their business start-ups!
