"We believe that being part of a community matters, it involves reaching out to volunteer, raising funds for causes we care about, and sharing our spaces to build meaningful relationships. These collaborations are mutually enriching and enable our students to create connections beyond the school gates."

Who Knew Tragedy Could Be So Much Fun? English & Classics 6th Form Symposium

By Alisha O and Amy T, Year 13 Classics Reps with Dr Klimt, English Department

On Friday 10 February 2023, the NHEHS Tragedy Symposium brought together English and Classics Sixth Form students from our school, as well as visitors from Drayton Manor High School and Elthorne Park High School, to listen to Durham University’s Professor Edith Hall deliver a rousing talk on the origins of tragedy in Ancient Greece.

Professor Hall’s lecture drew on a wide range of fascinating source material, coupled with accessible examples of the changing – yet timeless – genre of tragedy across the ancient and modern world. The break-out seminar sessions after Professor Hall’s lecture saw students make thoughtful comparisons of Classical, Shakespearean, and modern tragedies in addition to discussing the role of women in tragedy and its evolution. A short plenary led by Dr Swallow rounded off a highly enjoyable afternoon. Who knew Tragedy could be so much fun!
