Year 1 Take Taste Tests in Science Lesson
Year 1 Science lesson – taste test
Year 1 have been learning about their five senses over the last few Science lessons and last week explored their sense of taste. They learnt the five tastes – salt, sweet, sour, bitter and umami (savoury) and licked cotton buds with a different food from each taste before mapping the area where they tasted it on a tongue diagram.
It used to be thought that each taste was detected in a different part of the tongue but Mr Bansal revealed that more recent research has shown it is not restricted to one region and that all flavours can be detected by the whole tongue.
Next, to see how taste and smell are linked, pupils performed the long-awaited popcorn test with scientific rigour – eating popcorn while holding their noses! A tricky manoeuvre at the best of times but they managed to determine that smell does increase one’s ability to taste. Well done Year 1 scientists!
