"We believe that being part of a community matters, it involves reaching out to volunteer, raising funds for causes we care about, and sharing our spaces to build meaningful relationships. These collaborations are mutually enriching and enable our students to create connections beyond the school gates."

Eco Reps Add More Lockdown Eco Tips & Challenges!

The last two weeks have been busy ones for our Eco Reps, as they shared brand new eco tips with us and launched new active travel challenges with us via the Student Noticeboard.

Eco Tips

Reducing food waste was the key message behind last week’s eco tips:

Watch what you have in your fridge and pay attention to the next food item that will go bad.

Meal plan every Sunday to ensure you are actually using up what you have.

Cook with leftovers! Toss them together in a salad, soup or stir fry!

Many people have been taking up gardening as a great way to unwind during the lockdown, so this week Year 10 Eco Rep Selena Ali has come up with some top tips for eco friendly gardening. Click here to read them.

Active Travel Challenges

Our Reps have also been setting active travel challenges for students this term. Last week, they set an Air Pollution Mini Quiz, with 10 house points per entry up for grabs.

What effect of air pollution is caused by CFCs from spray cans getting released into the air?

What colour of the Air Quality Index lets us know that the air outside is ‘good?’

What do we call the actual gas or substance that causes air pollution?

Due to Coronavirus, pollution levels have decreased greatly, so this week the Reps challenged girls to send in photos of their cleaner ways to travel (walking, cycling, scooting, skating!), with 10 house points available for all photos or videos submitted!

Eco Activities

Our Reps also shared this very useful hand mask beauty treatment – especially helpful if you are suffering with the constant hand washing.

Ingredients: Half an avocado, 1 egg white, 2 tablespoons of oats, 1 Tablespoon of lemon juice

Instructions: Mix all of the ingredients into a small bowl. Use a fork to completely blend the ingredients and form a thick paste. Or you can use a blender (Nutri Bullet if you have one – this saves the arm workout!) Then cover your hands with the mask and leave it on to penetrate. Once the mask is mixed, slather it over your hands. Massage it in gently and allow it to sit on your hands for 20 minutes so the avocado and the other ingredients have a chance to hydrate and soothe the skin. Wash the mask off with water. When the 20 minutes are up, use warm water to rinse off the mask. Dry your hands with a clean towel, and follow up with your favourite hand cream to lock in the moisture. Use this mask once or twice a week to keep your hands soft and hydrated.

Eco Did You Know?

Finally, we are all using the internet and relying on its better-known search engines a lot during the lockdown, but did you know about Ecosia – a search engine that uses its profits to plant trees? Thanks to Eliza Beresford for this great tip!

Remember to get involved with our challenges (win house points!) and send us your own eco tips. Keep your eyes on the Student Noticeboard for more eco updates and watch out – we are planning to launch an Eco Newsletter very soon!
