How to Support Fairtrade Fortnight at NHEHS
This year NHEHS will be marking Fairtrade Fortnight during the week of 22nd-26th February. The Year 9 Humanitarian Leads are busy preparing activities to celebrate the event and raise awareness of ethical produce and the impact it has on communities.
According to our Year 9s, ‘A Fairtrade Premium is paid into a communal fund for workers and farmers to use as they see fit — this could be on education or healthcare for their children, developing their business or building infrastructure such as roads and bridges for their community. Fairtrade means zero-tolerance of child labour, and the organisation works to bring an end to such practices, this greatly helps the local communities. Fairtrade is all about helping farmers improve the amount of crops they produce and making sure they get a fair share of the income from their products.’
In next week’s edition of the charity newsletter look out for:
- Simple food swaps which can be made at home to create an ethical store cupboard
- A range of Fairtrade chocolate which has been sampled and rated
- A Fairtrade cookbook containing tasty recipes put together by our Year 9s
- A Fairtrade baking competition – how many Fairtrade ingredients can you include in one delicious cake or batch of brownies?
The Humanitarian Leads are also currently carrying out an audit of the school canteen, different departments and the students themselves to discover how Fairaware we all are. Their hard work will result in the school obtaining the ‘Fairaware award’ which is the first step towards achieving the school Fairtrade award.
