"We believe that being part of a community matters, it involves reaching out to volunteer, raising funds for causes we care about, and sharing our spaces to build meaningful relationships. These collaborations are mutually enriching and enable our students to create connections beyond the school gates."

Junior School Walk to School Week 2023

Last week was ‘Walk to School Week’ at Junior School! We invited all our NHEHS Juniors to come to school by using an environmentally sustainable mode of transport. This week’s challenge aimed to show the school’s continued commitment to promoting active travel and reducing air pollution around the school gates.

We were delighted with the uptake from Reception all the way up to Year 6, with so many girls scooting, cycling, walking, taking the school bus or public transport to NHEHS with one Year 6 cycling as far as 6km to get to school today! All girls taking part were rewarded with a special sticker presented by Miss Cassar and our team of Year 6 Eco Councillors, who also spoke passionately to us about why it’s important to travel to school using sustainable transport on our Junior Instagram below.

Miss Cassar also carried out an active travel survey of pupils from Years 3-6 during the week. Some of the initial findings:

65.9% girls from Year 3-6 said that the week has inspired them to Walk to School more often (with 22.7% saying it doesn’t apply to them because they are already walking).

31% of girls would usually come to school by car, however this week our best travel day saw only 6.1% of girls come by car for their entire journey.

More than 10% of girls choose to scoot and cycle throughout the week.

Throughout the week, 30-40% of girls chose to walk from their homes to school.

Girls said their biggest challenges getting to school on time were due to early morning clubs and living far away.

Earlier this year we received our Gold TfL Stars award and are now among the top 10% of London schools that have fulfilled the criteria of setting high standards to inspire others to transform travel habits, fully engage the wider community to promote best practices, and see a measurable reduction in the number of journeys made by car every day.

Well done to everyone taking part! Keep up the great work.
