NHEHS Plays Host to Seven Schools for Year 10 Maths Feast
By Ariana G, Year 10
On Friday 4th March NHEHS hosted a Year 10 Maths Feast with The Advanced Mathematics Support Programme, a government-funded initiative which aims to increase participation in Core Maths, AS/A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics. The Maths Feast is a fun educational challenge for Year 10 students which tests problem-solving and teamwork skills so teams of four Year 10 students per school get to test their maths skills with an all-you-can-eat feast of problems! There are several rounds requiring different skills and strategies for success, with awards given for good teamwork and for the winning team of each round.
Near the beginning of the year a group of Year 10s had started attending a club in preparation for the Maths Feast. Each week we practised a different section of the competition – some of them being the merry go round, the comprehension round and the relay round. Then we were put into groups for the actual competition on March 4th. Year 10 students and teachers came to NHEHS from The Green School for Girls, St Marylebone School, Christ’s School, James Allen’s Girls’ School, Oasis Academy South Bank, Gunnersbury Catholic School and Halcyon London International School to take part in the different rounds.
Our school had two teams, each of four students. ‘Team Kirk’ consisted of Ariana, Daria, Nicola and Zara. ‘Team Ginger’ consisted of Amanda, Maia, Rosie and Amelia. Each team excelled in different areas, but Team Kirk came in third place and Team Ginger came in fourth place. Congratulations to the overall joint winners James Allen’s Girls’ School and Gunnersbury Catholic School.
Thank you to our Maths teachers for helping us prepare for the event – we thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon of problem solving.
Our JAGS team thoroughly enjoyed their Y10 Maths Feast of problem-solving and teamwork on Friday afternoon. Coming equal first on the results table was the icing on the cake! Thank you @Advanced_Maths and @nhehs for hosting. pic.twitter.com/0onBictzRQ
