"We believe that being part of a community matters, it involves reaching out to volunteer, raising funds for causes we care about, and sharing our spaces to build meaningful relationships. These collaborations are mutually enriching and enable our students to create connections beyond the school gates."

Science Week 2022 at NHEHS

By Sylvie R, Science Rep, Year 12

Science Week 2022 at NHEHS took place from the 11th to the 18th March and was full of a wide range of exciting activities that took place throughout the week. There was a huge variety of talks, workshops and competitions for everybody to get involved in.

The events started with the arrival of the chicks on Monday 7th, with all three boys and seven girls hatching in time for science week. Through the week each year got the chance to visit the chicks, learning how to hold them and observing how they almost doubled in weight since hatching. You can see some of the chicks here! Additionally taking place throughout the week was a science photography exhibition and criminal investigation workshops for Year 7 during their science lessons.

On Tuesday, there was a Sixth Form vs teachers science themed University Challenge during lunch with the sixth formers narrowly losing to the teachers by one round making for a gripping competition! We were grateful to hear from Dr Bosco Li, Dr Elora Mukherjee and Hasfa Malik in a series of medicine and dentistry talks after school on Tuesday.

Additionally for those interested in medicine there was a GDST virtual medical conference throughout Wednesday – a big thank you to Oxford High School for organising this event! Also on Wednesday Ms Blenkinsop and the Sixth Form science reps ran taster sessions for the Junior School where they got to experience what science in the senior school is like. In the atrium at lunchtime the Year 7s took part in the finals of their New Scientist Roulette Challenge with Isabella W F being awarded first place after giving a three minute talk on a New Scientist article about the evolution of tails.

On Thursday some Year 11 students took on the teachers in a science-themed Spelling Bee and while they were strong competition, the staff were victorious once again.

Year 9 took part in a workshop on ancient species during their lessons and during lunch Year 8 had the chance to showcase their bronze CREST award projects in a science fayre after everyone had enjoyed the science themed lunch!

Finishing off Science Week 2022 was a remote family science quiz led by Dr Pearce and the Science Reps. There were a wide variety of questions exploring each aspect of science and it was a brilliant way to end the week.

Thank you to the Science faculty for a wonderful week of activities and make sure to have a read through this year’s science week bumper edition of  The Franklin magazine!
