Students Celebrate Chinese New Year
On Monday, the Year 7, 9 and 12 students of Chinese led an assembly to celebrate the Chinese New Year, as it is the year of the Dragon – one of the most important as the Dragon represents a symbol of power, wisdom, success and good luck.
The assembly featured Sophie XA playing the Guzheng, a traditional Chinese instrument, while the Year 7 students performed a dragon and fan dance. The song Sophie played was called “The Fisherman Song” and the performance told the story of a dragon, who appears in the water, and dances around the wave.
Miss Gamberini said, “Sophie was amazing. The whole school thoroughly enjoyed the performance and found it very amusing. I received a lot of great feedback about Sophie’s performance.” Watch the performance below!
Celebrations continued during the week with a delicious Chinese lunch complete with fortune cookies on Friday and fun activities during Character Club.
Today, students received lucky red envelopes, tasted the Rice Cake (a traditional Chinese dessert for New Year), wrote auspicious messages using the ink and the brush and made their own dragons. The session was run by brilliant Year 12 Chinese Reps Niru and Monica, with the excellent help of Charlotte and Aisha.
