Year 7 & 8 Students Compete at First LEGO League Regionals
Our team of Year 7 and 8 students recently took part in the First LEGO League regional competition – a science and technology challenge to encourage an interest in real world issues and develop key skills that are crucial for future careers. Students work as a team to explore a given topic and to design, build and programme a LEGO robot to solve a series of missions. Read how they got on in this report by Year 8 Daisy G.
A few weeks ago, our NHEHS team took part in the First Lego League Regionals. This was a great experience us as we got to understand how engineering can help solve real-world issues.
The theme for this year was Masterpiece. I was involved in the Innovation project. We had the task of creating a solution to a problem to do with the theme: sharing your interests. We brainstormed for a while and then came up with the idea of a website, in which you could print off and play games for a reasonable price. This was meant for people who could not afford board games. We really wanted to make it accessible for all. Once we had come up with this idea, we began making the website.
Meanwhile, the Robot team was busy coding our robot to complete the challenges on the map. They made an attachment which could push down and pull up. This was really simple but effective. The Core values team were also very busy, coming up with amazing mascots and a really good dance.
On the actual day, we were one of the first to present to the judges. Our team was a strong one, made up of both Year 7s and Year 8s. This was a really good opportunity to work with the younger years too. The judges liked our presentations, website and dance. Later on in the day, we competed in the robot games, getting a high of 180 points, which was higher than last year by around 20 points. We were only 15 points off the top spot, which was a great achievement.
Unfortunately, we did not win the competition, but we had lots of fun and learned a lot about the world of engineering. We are all very thankful for this opportunity and can’t wait for next year!
