A Busy Start for NHEHS Charities
It’s been a busy start to the school year for charities at NHEHS with school-wide and form-led initiatives. Here’s what’s been happening so far.
For Harvest Festival, all forms were encouraged to create the best hamper and bring in the most food for our donation to Ealing Food Bank last week. The combined total weighed in at a fantastic 867 kg and we were particularly impressed with the many displays of creativity, including a cookie monster and a giant tampon! Congratulations to 8G for the best display and 7G for the most food.
As part of the school’s Go Green Week (October 12-15th), we will be supporting The Felix Project – a charity that links businesses with surplus food and school communities and charities in need of food, with the aim of reducing food waste. On Thursday everyone will be encouraged to wear green and donate to the charity.
Each year group is choosing their own charity to support by holding various fundraising activities over one month. First up are Year 11 who are supporting Woman’s Aid. Led by the Charity Reps, the Year 11s have been packaging up sweets and labels then selling them as ‘Sweet Messages,’ which students and staff can buy for £3 each, which they can give or send to others, incorporating individual messages in the packages. There have been over 100 purchases of the ‘Sweet Messages’ so far already! The Charity Reps have also emailed parents about taking part in a virtual quiz. The Year 11s are also organising a teachers’ ‘Would I lie to You’ event in the Main Hall on November 5th which will be live for Years 7 and 8 and which will be replayed for other year groups the following day. If you would like to donate, please see the Year 11’s Go Fund Me page here.
As part of the Year 10 and 11 Enrichment Programme, students are volunteering at a variety of locations (with Covid guidance) on Wednesday afternoons, including local primary schools, Oxfam and dog walking for the elderly. Some girls are also helping litter picking in Ealing with LAGER Can Ealing – a great initiative suggested by one of our parents, Sadaf Maruf and her daughter Hana. We will be featuring more on this shortly on our website as more local schools have since joined this fantastic project. A group of Year 11 girls has also been working (as a bubble) at the Children’s Book Project, where they sorted over 1000 books on one visit! They are also organising a book collection for the charity. Our Charity Enterprise group are coming up with fundraising ideas for their charity Rethink while other students are continuing to work hard in Pitshanger Park, weeding, padding down pond walls and borders and digging.
With more initiatives planned for November and December, watch this space for more charity and volunteering news!
