A Truly Tropical Flavour for 2024’s Art Charity Fashion Show
A wonderful opportunity to celebrate the creativity of the students at NHEHS and to highlight the incredible Art department was this year’s Annual Charity Fashion show.
Drawing inspiration from the theme Tropical, fashion icons like Coco Chanel and Paul Poiret introduced tropical motifs and fabrics into their designs, sparking a trend that has continued to evolve over the years. Alexander McQueen is a designer in particular who we drew much inspiration from this year; known for his innovative designs exploring everything tropical, incorporating prints and patterns from the lush flora and fauna as well as vibrant colours and exotic texture associated with the environment. Accessories play a crucial role in completing McQueen’s looks, much like the pieces from our Year 9 and Art Club designers.
This year we chose to support the Rainforest Trust which aims to help save endangered wildlife and protect our planet by creating rainforest reserves through partnerships, community engagement and donor support.
Entry to the Fashion Show was open to all, while our Year 9 Art students also took to the catwalk, showcasing some of their class work. We kicked off the evening with the sustainable accessories made in the Art club stemming from felt fruit projects which have been upcycled into stylish bags and hats.
We were very lucky to welcome a panel of guest judges to select the winners for the competition round: Antonia Krasowski – fashion editor, content creator and art director and Gill Davies who has her own personal styling brand called Prescribe:London and is also a stylist/coach for the charity Smart Works.
Special commendation: Alex O’D, Year 7 – based on nature and different flowers of the rainforest, this hand-made crocheted dress was adorned with crocheted flowers is accessorised with a tropical crocheted hat with palm leaves.
1st: Designer: Sophie T, Year 7 – based on Hawaii, Sophie designed an outfit that can be worn every day, drawing inspiration from Tropical flora, with Monstera leaves hand painted onto a shirt and jeans.
2nd: Designer: Matilda M, Year 9 – based on the keel billed toucan, the dress displays all the colour on the bird, which lives in the tropics. The dress was worn by Deya and designed and constructed by Matilda M.
3rd: Designers: Ella S and Ayda H, Year 8 – this outfit was inspired by tropical fruits, focusing on a queen pineapple, consisting of a green silky dress with a detailed green and gold cape. The main dress makers were Ayda and Ella and the model was Lara. This entire dress was sewn together from fabrics.
Well done to all involved for a great evening!
The evening would not have been possible without all the support from so many different people. Huge thanks to our judges, Mrs Smith for the lighting, our Art Reps and Art Dept – Ms Di Paola, Ms Cagnino, Mrs Fisher Black and Shuk!
