"We believe that being part of a community matters, it involves reaching out to volunteer, raising funds for causes we care about, and sharing our spaces to build meaningful relationships. These collaborations are mutually enriching and enable our students to create connections beyond the school gates."

BUDS 2024 Session 2: STEM, Public Speaking, Creative Thinking for Local Primary Schools’ Year 5 Pupils

Saturday saw 100% attendance (and some new joiners!) from 51 Year 5 students from nine local primary schools at our second BUDS 2024 session.

BUDS is our Saturday enrichment programme aimed at Building Understanding, Developing Skills in gifted and talented Year 5s at Christ the Saviour C of E Primary, Selborne Primary, Montpelier, North Ealing Primary, Little Ealing Primary, Green Dragon Primary, Stanhope Primary, Blair Peach Primary and St Vincent’s Primary Acton schools.

Here’s what everyone got up to, according to Mr Fernando who oversees BUDS:

STEM Myth Busters Challenge: Does toast always land butter side down?
Using real buttered toast to predict, methodically work through, test, record, and evaluate. Emphasising the absence of right or wrong answers, they navigate variables, fostering awareness against unconscious bias. Optional homework was to look at own findings at home and bring to next session.

Public speaking, writing and performing poetry: How to engage the listener
We looked at different types of poetry and learned some top tips to write and perform our own poems to engage the listener.

Creative Thinking Flow Technique: An important element of a creative mind
We explored the simple and yet often forgotten idea of the flow, or creating a story that follows a natural direction, making it a more enjoyable experience for the audience.

Watch the video of the session, including some fantastic feedback from the Year 5s:

A big thank you to our amazing ten Sixth Formers and staff.

Great work, everyone!
