Charities Update – January 2024
Volunteering
Last week a group of volunteers from Year 10 to Year 13 visited a Care 4 Calais supported hotel in Hayes where they ran some craft, games and music activities for the children supported by the charity. It was lovely to see many of the children again who we have met on previous occasions.
Tuesday afternoon volunteering is continuing for Year 10 and 11 this term as part of their enrichment, with singing/crafts at local care homes and helping out in our local parks. One group has been volunteering at Ealing Riding School for the first time helping to muck out and look after the horses. In March, a group of students will be going to North Ealing Primary School for Science Week to make cardboard kaleidoscopes with Year 3 pupils. Our Year 10s are also hoping to organise their second Easter Fair for Mencap’s clients towards the end of term. At Christmas, Year 10 ran a fun Festive Fair for the charity which included fun craft, games and music activities for our guests.
Annual Staff and Year 13 Panto for Umunandi
Earlier this week we enjoyed ‘The Wizard of Oz‘ – a fantastic pantomime courtesy of Dr Pearce, the Year 13s and our teachers, which was put together in only a week! The Panto was also a fundraising event for the Sixth Form Charity, which this year is Umunandi – a small charity, with a close connection to one of our Year 13s. The charity raises money to support a school and education provision in Uganda. The charity promotes: 1) Advancement of education 2) Preservation and protection of good health 3) Relief of poverty for the benefit of orphans and vulnerable children and their families, particularly but not exclusively in Lusaka, Zambia. As a group of young people who are fortunate to have access to all those things, we feel that it is part of our community and service to be able to help those who don’t. Students were asked to bring in donations and donate via ParentPay.
Pond Club Fundraiser for Ealing Wildlife Group
A few years ago our Charity and Eco Reps got involved with re-designing the pond outside the science block.
Last week, our Pond Club members led by Year 9s Edie J and Frankie S, ran a popular lunchtime bake sale complete with chocolate fountain for Ealing Wildlife Group. They raised £110.70 for the local charity which recently introduced a family group of beavers to Ealing – the first time beavers have returned to West London in 400 years!
Cultural Fair Fundraising for Unicef
As part of our Cultural Celebration Week activities, we organised a Cultural Fair at lunchtime on Wednesday. Pupils and staff from across the Senior School organised activities and prepared delicious snacks and traditional foods from different cultures. The biggest fair to date, there were 17 stalls in total, including one from the EU and one demonstrating Chinese calligraphy. All profits will go to Unicef. The fair was rounded up by a little Scottish dancing led by Miss Lindsay.
Year 9 have been busy planning and running fundraising events this month, also for Unicef, their chosen year group charity. They have already run a popular bake sale with more lined up including a lunchtime movie and snacks, a teacher vs. students dodgeball and a Valentines/Galentines chocolate delivery service.
Thank you for your continued support!
