"We believe that being part of a community matters, it involves reaching out to volunteer, raising funds for causes we care about, and sharing our spaces to build meaningful relationships. These collaborations are mutually enriching and enable our students to create connections beyond the school gates."

Deb Soc Debates Positive Environmental Impact of Covid-19

DebSoc met again today (Mon 4th May). Our topic was inspired by Mr. Livings’  virtual assembly last week, in which our Head of Geography spoke about the impact of Covid-19 and whether our values are changing towards the environment.

We had a relaxed and informal debate on the motion: “Covid-19 will have a POSITIVE environmental impact in the long-term.” Girls spent time preparing both ‘for’ and ‘against’ motions, before volunteering and rebutting a range of ideas. We explored how to use different categories to broaden our range of arguments when preparing for challenging debates. For example, we considered the physical, psychological, local vs international, governmental, social, economic fields to inform our thinking. We then considered how we might ensure the positive environmental outcomes could be sustained at NHEHS and our local communities in a post lockdown scenario.

Miss Gordon was incredibly impressed by the range of thought-provoking ideas proffered by the girls. Practising using real-life examples (not only researched statistics) ensured the discussion was relevant, meaningful and would pique the interest of debating audiences in future.

DebSoc is on 1-1:30pm every Monday for Years 7-9. New members welcome anytime, no commitment to attending weekly! Full details are on the extra-curricular noticeboard, with a link to our Google Meet.
