Florence Inspires Students on History of Art Trip
During half term, some of our Sixth Formers travelled to Florence, for a four day History of Art trip. Here are some of their reflections and highlights of a wonderful few days in the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance.
“The Uffizi was really overwhelming but incredible, didn’t know where to look as there was so much to see. But we made it to the Gentileschi and saw the painting of ‘Judith Slaying Holofernes’ which was a real highlight as this is such a powerful dramatic work. It was absolutely amazing to see the ‘Adoration of the Magi’ by da Fabriano and Botticelli’s ‘Primavera’ in real life as we have studied these in class.”
“We loved the Alphonse Mucha exhibition at the Museo degli Innocenti. These Art Nouveau posters have such graphic appeal with their sinuous decorative lines.”
“We saw Michelangelo’s ‘David’ in the Galleria dell’Accademia on the last day before our flight which was amazing to see in real life, as it is so much bigger than what it appears to be in photos (17ft!). “
“We have to admit that a key highlight from the Florence trip was also the ice cream, and some of us managed nine scoops of ice cream in one day. The best flavour according to Alexia was bubble gum but the tiramisu ice cream was also delicious. Shout out to the Year 13s for finding the best gelato places online. “
“We could see an amazing view of Florence from the San Miniato al Monte that was definitely worth the 20 minute walk up a hill. The Duomo stood out among the rest of the city and after attending a church service in the chapel, we exited to see all of Florence lit up as it got dark.”
